    Several boats weighed in white marlin up to 72 pounds, but weren't close to the two 80-pounders taken yesterday on Billfisher for second and third. Betty Nick's in Seaside Park heard from a customer who said there was some grass in the Island Beach State Park surf, but caught several small blues and a short striper on bait at the north end.

    Though only the dolphin leader may be hard to overturn, Monday's opening day of the MidAtlantic Tournament out of Cape May and Ocean City, Md. was a great one for the fleet as 111 of the 127 boats involved used one of their three fishing days this week to take advantage of light winds and fairly calm seas in the quest for a 2,412,510 purse. It only took a 38-pounder to win at the recent White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Md, and a 30-pound dolphin won at last month's Beach Haven White Marlin Invitational.

    There may not be many anglers still seeking them, and they do take a lot of dedication to find and tempt, but striped bass continue to flourish in the warm summer waters of NY NJ Bight. Bob Matthews reports from Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina that ocean fluking remained good over the weekend, and some dolphin up to 15 pounds were found not too far offshore.

    Capt. Ryan Bogan reported hot fluking aboard the Jamaica II from Brielle during Saturday morning's trip as several limits were posted during the half-day -- including a double-limit catch by veteran fluke angler Dale Isaacs of Manchester despite fishing with an oxygen tank strapped to his leg. Another angler released a similar fluke that hit a big Hopkins, and two casters reported catching a few pee-wee blues.

    He picked a couple of dolphin off a pot in the Glory Hole, but there was no afternoon bonito bite at Barnegat Ridge -- which has been consistent in the morning. It was an off-day in Raritan Bay for stripers as Chuck Many of Annandale made a rare short Saturday morning trip with his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands which turned out to be the toughest of the year.

    Jeff Merrill reports from Cape May that We're just hours away from the kickoff of the 2014 MidAtlantic tournament and crews are busy at CanyonClub Resort Marina in Cape May, New Jersey and Sunset Marina in Ocean City, Maryland preparing for what's expected to be another exciting event. In addition to the popular billfish calcuttas of previous years, several new calcuttas this year include numerous meatfish options with large payouts expected for tuna, dolphin and wahoo as well.

Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reports continued good fluking in Shark River, though most of the bigger fluke are being caught on rough bottoms in the ocean to the north.

    Despite the gloom and doom weather forecast, Chuck Many of Annandale decided to fish for stripers today with his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands. After a 35-incher on a live bunker to start, the majority of bass were shorts -- but if we were keeping fish there wouldn't have been any problem in catching a three-man limit for Many, Matt Calabria and I.
